Itemized gifts are loaded through June 30, 2026 for the 2025–2026 cycle. Later FEC reports are not processed yet, so recent totals are incomplete.
About the data
Sources
- Itemized receipts (Schedule A), independent expenditures (Schedule E) and committee history: the FEC's PostgreSQL data dumps, refreshed weekly by the FEC and here monthly.
- Candidates, committees and the links between them: FEC bulk files (candidate master, committee master, candidate-committee linkage, committee contributions to candidates).
- State map: US Census Bureau cartographic boundary files (public domain), as packaged by us-atlas.
How the numbers are built
- "For" money is what was given to a candidate's own committees, plus independent expenditures reported as supporting them. "Against" is independent expenditures reported as opposing them.
- Individual donors are matched by name and ZIP code, because the FEC does not assign individuals an ID. Two people with the same name in the same ZIP code may be combined.
- Only contributions over $200 are itemized with a donor name; smaller gifts appear only as a total per candidate.
- Memo entries are left out so that earmarked gifts are not counted twice.
How current it is
Itemized gifts are loaded through June 30, 2026. The FEC processes reports weeks after they are filed, so the newest months are incomplete, and a candidate who started raising money recently can show less here than on the FEC's own summary.
Corrections made to the FEC records
- Amended reports. When a committee re-files a report in full, only the newest filing is counted. A smaller later filing (a partial amendment, or a separate report for another period) is counted alongside the original.
- One committee, two candidate IDs. When the FEC links a committee to two candidate IDs in one cycle (a candidate who re-registered, or ran for another seat), its money is counted once, for the candidate whose committee it is in that election.
- Records left out. A single "individual" gift above $20,000 that the candidate did not give is almost always a filing error (one check can legitimately cover several elections, but not this much), and so are committees reported as individuals. These records are left out of every total and donor page, and are listed with their filings so they can be checked.
- Placeholder names such as "Anonymous" or "Unknown" are not people, so they get no donor page.
- Totals are net of refunds. A donor whose refunds were larger than their gifts in the years shown has a negative total.
Charts
Every chart uses both colour and a fill pattern (stripes, dots, cross-hatching) for each series, and lists every value in text, so it can be read without telling colours apart.
